Top 5 Staycay Adventures [3/5]: Galleries and Museums

When I’m on holiday the buildings I usually want to see tend to be tourist attractions and most of them happen to be Art Galleries or Museums.

And if you think about it quirky and beautiful buildings tend to draw in the crowds. Take for example, the strongest memory I have about the Guggenheim Museum in New York is the winding spiral ramp interior. That was almost 10 years ago and yet I remember it quite clearly. The artwork inside, not as much. Would I go back? In a heart beat!

The great thing about museums is they’re usually a combination of both (museum and art gallery) and if the museum doesn’t have a gallery there’s usually one nearby.

When I googled “Auckland art gallery” I was surprised to find there’s 14 of them listed, over half of which I hadn’t heard of before and there’s even more museums. There’s probably several other hidden gems that aren’t on Google maps.

Google your area to see what comes up and you may be surprised like I was and then add them to your list of Staycay Adventure ideas.

Remember, you don’t have to do everything on your list but you shouldn’t run out of ideas either. Keep your list full at all times so you won’t have any excuses. Excuses like, “I’m not doing anything this weekend”, it’s too expensive to go out or there’s nothing to do.

In Auckland two of my favourite Staycay locations are the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and Auckland War Memorial Museum. Both have cafes (a must for me) and most have a souvenir shop.

One of the other things I like about Art Galleries and Museums are all the variations you can find. For example there’s indigenous, national, contemporary, futuristic and more.

The numbers

Many of the Art Galleries and Museums I’ve been to are either free or have a small fee for locals. This could differ depending on where you are and could change depending on the time of year as well. Peak periods like school holidays tend to cost more for some places.

Finally, remember to check for specifics for getting a local discount as you may have to bring proof.

So there you have it! #3 in my Top 5 Staycay Adventures.
